Lakewood Residency Program
About The Program

Program Director:  Lawrence Hodor, D.P.M.

Dr. Lawrence Hodor has been the program director since 1987. As a Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program offering the Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Credential, one resident is selected annually for three years of contiguous training.

Lakewood Regional Medical Center is an acute care facility with 172 hospital beds located in Lakewood, CA (near Long Beach). The hospital recently opened a new state of the art cardiac catheterization lab in 2009. This technologically advanced addition increases the residents’ exposure to cardiologists, radiologists and vascular surgeons as they perform angiographic interventions to treat peripheral arterial disease in a team setting.

The resident physician also participates in surgical cases at six other hospitals in the area, for a combined total of 900 beds. The program features a strong comprehensive rotation schedule.

Rotations take priority over podiatric surgery during the first and second year, although the podiatric resident may leave their rotation to cover surgical cases as needed. Podiatric surgery takes priority over rotations for the third year. The senior resident has first choice of surgical cases. Surgical numbers are impressive and far exceed what is required in all categories.

The resident is treated with respect and dignity by the hospital and physician staff. The atmosphere is conducive to learning with a friendly and constructive podiatric staff. The majority of the 25 affiliated podiatrists are willing to provide skin-to-skin surgical instruction from day one. The program provides a private office for the residents complete with computers and internet access. The program also provides excellent practice management opportunities in the private offices of the different podiatric physicians.

Residents gain significant experience in managing diabetic foot infections, wound care, amputations, hospital consultations and working in a team approach to inpatient management. At the completion of training, proficiency will be attained in all phases of podiatric surgery. The strong general medicine background complements the foot and ankle training.

For those not familiar with Southern California, the Long Beach area is a great place to live. In twenty minutes you can be at Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, or the beach. Many fine restaurants are often frequented by the residents on their own time or at a hosted lecture, workshop or pharmaceutical presentation.

If you would like to arrange a visit or request specific information, please contact the residents’ office at 562-602-6723. You may also refer to the CASPR Directory.

Thank you for considering our program.
