At Lakewood Regional Medical Center, we are committed to supporting our community and making a difference in the lives of others.

That’s why we are so pleased to announce that Lakewood Regional Medical Center will once again host our Healthy Over Hungry Food Drive from June 7th through June 14th. Because we know that good nutrition is crucial for good health, we are supporting this drive which will benefit Project Shepherd and Long Beach Rescue Mission.

We are proud to report that Lakewood Regional Medical Center as collected and donated over 280,000 meals over the past four years.

As a result of the pandemic and our hospital’s focus on responding to those needs, we paused the program in 2020. This past year has been particularly devastating for families struggling with hunger since the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in extreme food shortages in many communities. That is why we decided to continue participation by hosting our food drive in June in spite of the ongoing pandemic.

We’re proud to be a part of this summertime initiative which provides a nutritious breakfast for those struggling with hunger in our community, many of whom are children. These children can no longer rely on their schools for meals during the summer.

Before the pandemic, an estimated 1 in 5 people in Los Angeles County lived with food insecurity, but after the COVID-19 outbreak, the number of people needing food assistance has markedly increased. It is now estimated that 1 in 4 of our neighbors faces food insecurity.

To join in our fight against hunger, simply:

  • Make a donation online at Project Shepherd by June 14 to purchase perishable items, such as milk, fruit and lean protein needed to complete a healthy breakfast.
  • To learn more about Project Shepherd, click here.
  • Make a donation online at Long Beach Rescue Mission by June 14 to provide a hot meal or perishable items.

It is important to remember that during any activities related to the cereal drive, everyone must continue to wear a mask, social distance and practice frequent hand hygiene to protect our patients, visitors and employees against COVID-19.

Thank you for all that you do every day to help our patients and our neighbors. Together, we are making a difference!
