Gastric Band

A minimally invasive and adjustable weight loss surgery procedure.

The Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure is a surgical weight loss option designed to help patients achieve sustained weight loss by limiting how much food can be eaten in one sitting, reducing overall appetite by helping to create a “full” feeling and slowing digestion to help you feel fuller, longer.

How Does Adjustable Gastric Banding Work?

The Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure involves the laparoscopic placement of a soft and flexible silicone band fitted around the upper part of the stomach that connects to an access port by a thin tube. It creates a much smaller stomach “pouch” and slows the passage of food from the stomach into the small intestine, thereby allowing a feeling of fullness sooner and for longer after eating.Lakewood Regional Medical Center offers a laparoscopic option for the adjustable gastric banding procedure, which means five or six small incisions are made on the abdomen and laparoscopic tools are used to help the surgeon visualize the abdominal cavity while performing the procedure. No matter the type of weight loss surgery performed, it is important for patients to work with their doctors to change former lifestyle habits after surgery and to replace them with healthy food choices, regular exercise and a regimen of vitamin supplementation.
